Warriors of Fate

Warriors of Fate (released in 1992 as Tenchi wo Kurau II – Sekiheki no Tatakai in Japan) is a classic 2D side-scrolling beat ’em up arcade game developed by Capcom for the CP System (CPS-1) hardware. Based on the Tenchi wo Kurau manga, it features a fictionalized, stylized retelling of the Three Kingdoms era, where players fight against the forces of a tyrant to bring peace to the land.

Gameplay Summary

  • Action Mechanics: The game is a traditional side-scroller focusing on hand-to-hand combat, weapon usage (swords, clubs, bows), and mounted combat. It is known for its fast-paced action, with up to three players fighting on-screen simultaneously.
  • Characters: Players choose from five warriors, often based on Chinese generals (Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Huang Zhong, and Wei Yan in the Japanese version). Each character has standard moves, a special attack (with invincibility frames), and a charge move.
  • Structure: The game spans nine stages featuring varied, colorful graphics, culminating in a boss battle against notable Wei generals, including Xu Huang and Lu Bu, before facing the final villain, Cao Cao (or “Akkila-Orkhan” in international versions).
  • Unique Features: Players can enter special stages, such as a food-eating contest or destroying wooden statues. The game also features multiple endings based on the player’s performance.

Storyline

In the original Japanese version, Shu Han, led by Liu Bei, fights against the evil Wei Kingdom to restore the Han Dynasty. In international versions, this storyline was altered: the hero Kuan-Ti and his five warriors fight the tyrant Akkila-Orkhan of Shang-Lo to stop his conquest.
