Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire

Released in 1997, Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire is the third installment in Capcom’s Darkstalkers series and is widely considered the pinnacle of the franchise on the CP System II (CPS2) arcade hardware.

Plot and Setting

The story centers on the resurrection of Jedah Dohma, one of the high nobles of the demon realm, Makai. Disturbed by the chaotic state of the world, Jedah creates a pocket dimension called Majigen, into which he lures “worthy souls” to be consumed to fuel the recreation of a new, stable world.

Key Gameplay Innovations

  • Damage Gauge System: Unlike traditional round-based fighters, matches consist of a single continuous round. Each player has multiple “Life Markers” (health bars); when one is depleted, the fighter briefly collapses and then gets back up to continue the fight immediately.
  • Dark Force System: Players can consume a portion of their super meter to activate a character-specific power-up state (e.g., flight, clones, or unique movement) for a limited time.
  • Recoverable Damage: Some damage taken is “white” health that can be slowly regenerated if the player avoids further hits, encouraging aggressive play to prevent opponent recovery.

Roster Changes

To stay within the CPS2’s storage limits while adding high-quality animations, Capcom removed three characters from the previous entry (Donovan, Huitzil, and Pyron) and introduced four newcomers:

  • Jedah Dohma: The main antagonist and a powerful demon noble.
  • Lilith: A “soul-shard” of Morrigan Aensland with a distinct, agile moveset.
  • B.B. Hood (Baby Bonnie Hood): A psychotic, weapon-toting bounty hunter themed after Little Red Riding Hood.
  • Q-Bee: A soul-devouring humanoid insect from the Beebee race.
