Thunder Force AC is a horizontal scrolling shooter released by Sega and Technosoft in 1990 for arcades. It is a “retooling” of the Sega Genesis classic Thunder Force III, modified specifically for coin-op play with several distinct differences in progression and content.
Key Gameplay Features
- Linear Progression: Unlike Thunder Force III, which allowed you to select your starting level, Thunder Force AC features a fixed, linear path through 8 stages.
- Unique Stages: While most levels are ported from Thunder Force III, stages 4 and 5 are completely different, featuring layouts and enemies borrowed from Thunder Force II as well as original content.
- Weapon System: You pilot the “Fire LEO-03 Styx” and can switch between collected weapons on the fly, including:
- Twin Shot / Sever: Upgraded forward-facing lasers.
- Back Fire / Lancer: Upgraded rear-facing shots.
- Wave: Wide-range shots that penetrate walls.
- Hunter: Homing shots for multi-directional coverage.
- CLAWs: Rotating satellite units that provide extra firepower and act as a shield.
- Difficulty: As an arcade title, it is significantly more challenging than its home console counterpart, often requiring strict memorization of hazards.
