The King of Fighters 2003 is a landmark 2D fighting game by SNK Playmore, serving as the tenth entry in the series and the final title released for the original Neo Geo hardware. It famously introduced the “Tales of Ash” story arc and a major gameplay shift to a tag-team battle system.

Gameplay Mechanics
The game overhauled the traditional round-based team structure in favor of a faster, continuous combat style.
- Multi-Shift Tag System: Players can swap between three team members in the middle of a fight by pressing specific button combinations (BC or CD), allowing for tag combos and speedier gameplay.
- Tactical Leader System: You designate one character as the “Leader” during selection. This character gains a blue life bar and access to a powerful “Leader Super Special Move,” which typically costs two power gauge stocks.
- Branching Paths: The game features two potential final boss fights depending on how you defeat the mid-boss, Kusanagi. If defeated with a Super Move, you face the true final boss, Mukai; otherwise, you face Adelheid Bernstein.

Roster and Characters
The game features a base roster of 32 playable characters, including several notable debuts and returns.
- Protagonist: Introduces Ash Crimson, a mysterious, effeminate hero (or anti-hero) with emerald green flames.
- Newcomers: Includes Shen Woo, Duo Lon, Malin, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves guests like Gato and Tizoc.
- Returning Favorites: Features classic characters such as Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, Terry Bogard (in his Garou jacket), Mai Shiranui, and K’.
- Secret Bosses: Adelheid Bernstein (son of Rugal) and the stone demon Mukai serve as the primary antagonists.
Story
Two years after the previous tournament, a new KOF is announced by a mysterious host. While the public is focused on the new “Multi-Shift” rules, a dark force known as “Those from the Past” (or His Distant Land) is manipulating the event to break the Orochi seal and harness its ancient power.
