Storm Blade is a classic vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up arcade game released by Visco Corporation in 1996. It is known for its fast-paced aerial combat, character-specific weapons, and randomized initial stages.
Gameplay and Features
The game is a military-themed vertical scrolling shooter where players pilot one of four different fighter jets, each with its own distinct weapons system:
- Lucky J. Striker (F-14D Tomcat): Features a wide frontal shot coverage and a bomb that summons a barrage of missiles.
- Alex (MiG-29A Fulcrum): Offers narrow frontal laser shots with side laser beams, and a powerful bomb that fires a large laser blast.
- Camel Yuki Anderson (AV-8B Harrier II): Has widespread shots and homing missiles, plus a bomb that creates a protective ring of energy balls.
- Isoroku Kaionji (Zero Fighter Kamikaze Special): Utilizes a 3-way shot and auto-aimed side shots, with a bomb that calls in assist planes for defense.
Key features include:
Difficulty: While challenging, the game is considered approachable for beginners to the genre (“shmup”) due to a balanced learning curve and effective power-ups.
Power-ups: Players can collect ‘P’ power-ups to increase shot power and ‘B’ power-ups for additional bombs.
Dynamic Stages: The first three stages are randomized in order, offering variety in gameplay, featuring locations like a port, an oil base, and the skies above Japan.
