Samurai Shodown V (known as Samurai Spirits Zero in Japan) is a 2D weapons-based fighting game released by SNK in 2003. It serves as a prequel to the entire series, set two years before the original game, and was one of the final titles released for the Neo Geo hardware. 

Gameplay Mechanics

The game shifted away from the aggressive, combo-heavy focus of previous entries toward a slower, more tactical pace. 

Special Button (D): Used for defensive maneuvers like rolling, ducking, and hopping, which provide temporary invincibility against certain attacks. 

Sword Gauge: A meter that decreases as you attack, lowering your damage output. It regenerates automatically when you are not attacking, rewarding careful timing.

Concentration One: A special slow-motion mode that can be activated when your health is low. It allows you to perform a powerful “Fatal Flash” (Issen) to potentially turn a match around.

Rage Explosion: A mechanic that instantly fills your rage gauge and stops the timer but permanently sacrifices your ability to use Rage for the rest of the match.

The roster of Samurai Shodown V consists of 24 playable characters in the original version, expanding to 28 in the “Special” and “Perfect” editions.

The base game introduced several major newcomers and split classic “Bust” styles into separate characters. 

• The Newcomers:
  • Yoshitora Tokugawa: The seven-sword-wielding protagonist.
  • Mina Majikina: An exorcist archer with her spirit companion, Chample.
  • Liu Yunfei: An ancient warrior seeking to hunt down his former disciples.
  • Youkai Kusaregedo: A massive, gluttonous demon.
• The Variant Characters (Former “Bust” styles):
  • Rasetsumaru (Haohmaru variant), Rera (Nakoruru variant), Enja (Kazuki variant), and Suija (Sogetsu variant).
• Returning Veterans:
  • Haohmaru, Nakoruru, Hanzo Hattori, Galford, Ukyo Tachibana, Kyoshiro Senryo, Genjuro Kibagami, Basara, Shizumaru Hisame, Gaira Caffeine, Jubei Yagyu, Charlotte, Tam Tam, Kazuki Kazama, Sogetsu Kazama, and Rimururu.
• Secret Character: Poppy (Galford’s dog) is playable via a hidden code (Highlight Galford and enter: →, ←, →, ←, ←, →, →, ←, ←, → + A).
