Released by Midway in 1992, Mortal Kombat revolutionized the arcade scene with its digitized sprites of real actors and visceral, “over-the-top” violence. Originally conceived to compete with Street Fighter II, it quickly carved its own legacy through the introduction of the infamous Fatality finishing moves.

Gameplay Mechanics
- Control Scheme: Used a unique five-button layout: High Punch, Low Punch, High Kick, Low Kick, and a dedicated Block button.
- Juggling: Introduced the “juggling” mechanic, allowing players to keep an airborne opponent defenseless with a chain of attacks.
- Fatalities: After winning two rounds, players were prompted to “Finish Him/Her!” with a specific button combination to execute a gruesome finishing move.
- Test Your Might: A recurring minigame where players rapidly pressed buttons to fill a meter and break materials like wood, stone, or diamond.

Story & Characters
The story centers on a mystical tournament held on an uncharted island. If the sorcerer Shang Tsung wins ten consecutive tournaments, his master (the Emperor of Outworld) can invade Earthrealm.
- Playable Roster: Included seven iconic fighters: Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Kano, Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero.
- The Bosses: Players fought through a “Mirror Match” and endurance rounds before facing the sub-boss Goro (a four-armed Shokan warrior) and the final shape-shifting sorcerer, Shang Tsung.
- Secret Character: Players could encounter Reptile by achieving a Double Flawless victory with a Fatality on “The Pit” stage while a silhouette crossed the moon.
