Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder is a popular arcade-exclusive beat ’em up from 1992, often considered the true sequel to the original Golden Axe. It was never widely ported to home consoles, but has appeared on a few dedicated retro-gaming devices in recent years.

Gameplay and Features
This installment made significant improvements over the original, running on Sega’s System 32 arcade hardware, which allowed for superior graphics and four-player simultaneous gameplay.
Branching Paths: The game introduced multiple pathways, allowing players to choose different routes at certain points, which added replayability.
New Characters: The game features an entirely new cast of four playable characters:
Sternblade: A barbarian similar to the original Ax Battler, with powerful fire magic.
Dora: A female centaur who uses thunder magic.
Goah: A giant who carries an aged Gilius Thunderhead on his back; Gilius casts the magic spells for the pair.
Little Trix: A young elf lad with a pitchfork whose unique “magic” attack grows apple trees to replenish health.
Enhanced Combat: Players could perform special moves and a hidden finisher on downed enemies. In multiplayer mode, players could also perform powerful tag-team finishers.
In Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder (1992), the villainous giant Death Adder has been resurrected and has once again conquered the land of Yuria. Armed with the legendary Golden Axe and a fire-breathing shield, he has enslaved the population to build a massive castle in his own image.
The Quest
Four new heroes set out to end Death Adder’s reign of terror:
- Stern Blade: A barbarian who uses powerful fire magic.
- Dora: A female centaur who uses earth magic and transforms into a human form while riding beasts.
- Goah: A giant who carries Gilius Thunderhead (the dwarf hero from the original game) on his back. Gilius casts death/entropy magic while Goah fights.
- Little Trix: A young elf who uses nature magic to grow apple trees that replenish the team’s health.
The heroes journey across diverse landscapes—often choosing between branching paths—until they reach Death Adder’s colossal castle.
The Final Battle and Gilius’s Sacrifice
Upon reaching the top of the castle’s “head,” the heroes confront Death Adder. After a fierce battle, the heroes appear to have won and attempt to escape on the back of a dragon. However, Death Adder ambushes them one last time, preparing a devastating final blow.
In a decisive moment of sacrifice, Gilius Thunderhead leaps onto Death Adder’s head and strikes him in the skull with his axe. The resulting explosion kills both Gilius and Death Adder, sending them plummeting from the dragon.
The Ending
The remaining three heroes fly away with the Golden Axe safely in their possession. In a lighthearted post-credits animation, all characters—including Gilius and even a friendly Death Adder—are seen celebrating and dancing together in a tavern with the message, “See you next game!“.
