Released in 1989 on the CPS1 (Capcom Play System 1) arcade board, Final Fight set the gold standard for urban beat ’em ups. Originally conceived as a sequel called Street Fighter ’89, it was rebranded to establish its own identity.

The Plot: Crime and Redemption
Set in the fictional, crime-ridden Metro City, the story follows three heroes on a personal crusade to dismantle the Mad Gear Gang.
- The Conflict: The newly elected Mayor and former pro-wrestler, Mike Haggar, refuses a massive bribe from the gang. In retaliation, the Mad Gear leader, Belger, kidnaps Haggar’s daughter, Jessica.
- The Rescue Team: Instead of negotiating, Haggar takes to the streets. He enlists Cody Travers (Jessica’s boyfriend and an expert brawler) and Guy (Cody’s friend and a master of ninjutsu) to help him tear through the gang’s ranks.
- The Conclusion: After fighting through six districts—from the slums to a high-rise penthouse—the trio confronts Belger. In the final struggle, Cody delivers a powerful uppercut that sends Belger crashing through a window to his death, successfully rescuing Jessica.
