Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom is the 1994 precursor to Shadow over Mystara and was the second title ever released for Capcom’s CP System II (CPS2) arcade hardware. It is the first of two arcade titles set in the Mystara campaign setting, followed by the sequel Shadow over Mystara

Gameplay Mechanics

The game blends traditional brawler action with RPG elements derived from the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop rules.

  • Characters: Players can choose from four distinct classes: FighterClericElf, and Dwarf.
    • The Fighter is balanced with high health and reach.
    • The Elf uses arcane spells like Fireball and Magic Missile.
    • The Cleric can Turn Undead and cast divine spells such as Cure Serious Wounds.
    • The Dwarf excels in close combat with fast combo speeds.
  • Combat & Strategy: Beyond basic attacks, the game features technical moves like blocking, dashing, and evading.
  • Branching Paths: Players frequently choose between different routes, meaning a single playthrough cannot visit every area.
  • Inventory & Items: Players can collect gold to purchase items like daggers, burning oils, and magical rings in shops between levels.

Iconic Enemies and Bosses

The game features many classic D&D monsters, including:

  • Kobolds, Gnolls, and Owlbears as common enemies.
  • Notable Bosses: A regenerating Troll (which must be burned), a Beholder, a Black Dragon, and the optional superboss Flamewing (a Great Wyrm Red Dragon).
  • Final Boss: The adventurers eventually confront the archlich Deimos in his Tower of Doom.
