DoDonPachi (1997) is a landmark vertically scrolling “bullet hell” arcade game developed by Cave and published by Atlus. As the second entry in the DonPachi series, it is widely credited with defining the modern manic shooter genre by introducing extreme bullet counts and a precise, tiny “hitbox” for the player’s ship.

Core Gameplay Mechanics
The game features three distinct ship types (A, B, and C) with two fire modes: a wide Shot for moving quickly and a concentrated Laser that slows movement for precision.
- Get Point System (GPS): A scoring system based on “chaining” hits. Players must destroy enemies in rapid succession to maintain a combo meter.
- The Second Loop: Clearing all six stages under specific conditions (e.g., losing fewer than two lives or collecting all hidden bees) unlocks a second, significantly harder loop.
- True Last Boss: Reaching the end of the second loop reveals the series’ iconic ultimate challenge: Hibachi, a giant mechanical bee known for near-impossible bullet patterns.
