Captain Commando

Captain Commando is a 1991 futuristic side-scrolling beat ’em up developed and published by Capcom for the CP System (CPS-1) arcade hardware. It is a 4-player cooperative game set in a dystopian 2026 Metro City.

Aspects of the Game:

  • Characters: Players choose from four characters: Captain Commando (leader with energy gloves), Mack the Knife (mummy alien), Ginzu the Ninja (blade expert), and Baby Head (a super-intelligent infant in a robot suit).
  • Gameplay: The gameplay is similar to Final Fight, allowing for standard combos, throws, and a “desperation” attack that drains health. It features 9 stages, ranging from city streets to an alien spaceship.
  • Mechanics: Unique features include the ability to ride mechs (punching, flaming, or freezing), pickup weapons, and dash.
  • Significance: While not as commercially successful as Street Fighter II, it is remembered as a polished, high-energy, and colorful CPS-1 title that supported up to 4 players simultaneously.

Story

The game takes place in a future version of Metro City (from Final Fight), which has been overrun by a crime wave engineered by the tyrannical alien Scumocide (known as Genocide in Japan). Scumocide has created “Super Criminals” through genetic engineering to rule Earth and the galaxy. Captain Commando and his team fight through various locales to stop him.
