Battle Garegga is a landmark vertically scrolling shooter released by Raizing in 1996. It is renowned for its gritty industrial aesthetic, a legendary Detroit techno-inspired soundtrack by Manabu Namiki, and an incredibly complex dynamic difficulty system.

The Infamous “Rank” System
The game’s most defining feature is its Rank System, which adjusts the difficulty in real-time based on your performance. The better you play, the harder the game becomes.
- Rank Increases: Actions like firing your weapon, picking up power-ups, and surviving for long periods make enemies more aggressive and their bullets faster.
- Rank Management: Expert players often use counter-intuitive tactics to keep the game manageable, such as suiciding (losing lives on purpose) or avoiding certain power-ups.
- Visual Hazards: Unlike many “bullet hell” games with bright neon projectiles, Garegga uses small, camouflaged shrapnel-like bullets that can be difficult to see against the detailed backgrounds.
Game Modes & Characters
- Stages: There are 7 stages in total, featuring modular bosses that can be dismantled piece-by-piece for extra points.
- Playable Ships: Initially features 4 ships (G-1010 Fighting Thunder, etc.), but secret codes unlock characters from Mahou Daisakusen (Sorcer Striker), bringing the total to 8 main ships with multiple variants.
- Scoring: Primarily revolves around collecting falling medals. If you catch every medal, their point value increases up to 10,000 points each.
