Battle Circuit

Battle Circuit is a sci-fi themed beat ’em up released by Capcom for the CP System II (CPS2) arcade hardware in 1997. It is notable for being Capcom’s final 2D arcade beat ’em up and for its eccentric, comic-book-inspired art style and diverse character designs.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

  • Four-Player Co-op: Supports up to four players simultaneously (depending on the arcade cabinet configuration).
  • Upgrade System: Unlike many brawlers, players collect coins from defeated enemies and breakable objects to buy “Upgrade Discs” between levels. These discs unlock new moves, extend life bars, or provide extra lives.
  • Battle Downloads: By pressing both action buttons while jumping, characters activate a unique buff that affects themselves and any allies nearby. Examples include attack power boosts or health regeneration.
  • Team-Up Attacks: If two or more players perform their special moves (Mega Crushes) at the same time, they execute a powerful joint attack for high damage and crowd control.

Playable Characters

The game features five bounty hunters, each codenamed after a color:

  • Cyber Blue (Brian Bruno): A cyborg with electric-based attacks and a damage-increasing Battle Download.
  • Captain Silver (Andrey Mishucin): A “rubber man” who can shapeshift his body and use ice-based projectiles.
  • Yellow Iris (Diana Martines): A fast fashion model/bounty hunter who uses a whip and is accompanied by a pet fox named Fin.
  • Pink Ostrich (Pinky): A large pink ostrich ridden by a young girl named Pola; she is the only character capable of sustained flight.
  • Alien Green (Unknown): A sentient, tentacled plant creature focused on grappling and healing allies.

Plot & Setting

Set in the year 20XX in the futuristic city of Neo Koba, a group of bounty hunters is tasked with capturing the mad scientist Dr. Saturn. The mission quickly evolves into a race to secure the “Shiva System,” a computer program capable of controlling all technology in the world, which has fallen into the hands of the criminal Delete Gang.
