A-JAX

A-JAX (released as Typhoon in Europe) is a 1987 vertical-scrolling shoot ’em up arcade game developed and published by Konami. The game is multi-layered gameplay that combines top-down 2D shooter segments with pseudo-3D stages.

Key Features and Gameplay

  • Plot: Set in a fictional 2007, players control “A-JAX” special combat troops fighting an alien invasion.
  • Vehicles: Players pilot a “Tom Tiger” helicopter in 2D stages and a “Jerry Mouse” fighter jet in 3D stages.
  • Combat: The game features intense action with both air-to-air guns (Vulcan, 3-Way, Laser) and air-to-ground bombs.
  • Visuals & Sound: It was considered ahead of its time for its, at the time, impressive scaling effects, digital sound samples, and fast-paced, high-quality music.
  • Difficulty: The game is notoriously challenging, utilizing a checkpoint-based system and limited credits.
