Super Dimension Fortress Macross II

The 1993 Super Dimension Fortress Macross II arcade game is a side-scrolling shooter that follows the basic premise and battles of the Macross II: Lovers Again anime series, where players fight a new alien threat called the Marduk. The game itself is a score-attack shooter, and while it features characters and mecha from the OVA, it does not delve deeply into the original anime’s character-driven story during gameplay.

Story Background

The game is set in the year 2092, 80 years after the original Macross conflict. Humanity has grown complacent, using the “Minmay Attack” strategy (using music to pacify Zentradi) as their primary defense mechanism. A new, more advanced humanoid alien race, the Marduk, arrives with enslaved Zentradi warriors who are immune to the Minmay Attack, forcing Earth’s U.N. Spacy military to engage in actual combat.

Gameplay and Story Progression

Players control a VF-2SS Valkyrie II variable fighter, piloted by either Silvie Gena (Player 1) or Nexx (Player 2). The game is divided into several stages where the objective is to achieve a designated “CLEAR SCORE” within a time limit to advance to the next level.

  • Battles: The gameplay focuses on the action sequences from the anime, battling various Marduk units. The story elements from the anime—which involve a reporter named Hibiki Kanzaki rescuing an Emulator (singer) named Ishtar and teaching her about Earth’s culture to end the war—are primarily presented through brief screens between levels or in demo sequences, rather than integrated gameplay.
  • Modes: Players can change between Fighter, Gerwalk, and Battroid modes by collecting specific power-up icons, which alter the ship’s capabilities to better handle different combat situations.
  • Objective: Ultimately, the player’s mission is to fight through the Marduk forces to defeat the Marduk leader, Emperor Ingues, and his mothership, thus protecting Earth and bringing an end to the war, mirroring the conclusion of the Macross II OVA.

The game is notable for being a horizontally scrolling shooter and for its focus on competitive, score-based gameplay over a detailed narrative campaign.
