Last Resort is a classic horizontally scrolling shoot ’em up developed and published by SNK in 1992 for the Neo Geo. Heavily inspired by the R-Type series, it is renowned for its dark, futuristic atmosphere and punishing difficulty.
Gameplay Mechanics
- The Unit (Orb): The game’s defining feature is a spherical “pod” that rotates around your ship. It acts as both a shield to nullify enemy bullets and a weapon that can be locked into position or launched as a powerful charged attack.
- Weaponry: Players can collect three primary power-ups, each upgradeable three times:
- L (Laser): A concentrated forward-firing beam.
- H (Homing): Missiles that track enemies.
- G (Ground): Missiles that crawl along surfaces, ideal for ground-based targets.
- Punishing Difficulty: Like many early SNK titles, it is extremely tough. Dying typically sends you back to a checkpoint with all your power-ups stripped away.
