Mortal Kombat II

Released in 1993, Mortal Kombat II (MKII) is widely considered the peak of the series arcade era, expanding the original’s roster, lore, and “shock value” with significantly improved graphics and faster gameplay.

Characters & Story

The sequel moves the tournament from Earth to the dark realm of Outworld, where the Emperor Shao Kahn hosts a new contest to lure and destroy Earth’s defenders.

  • The Roster: Increased from 7 to 12 playable fighters. Newcomers include KitanaMileenaBarakaJax, and Kung Lao.
  • Secret Challengers: Players can find hidden fights against unplayable characters like JadeSmoke, and Noob Saibot.
  • The Bosses: The sub-boss is the massive four-armed Kintaro, followed by the final showdown with Shao Kahn himself.

Expanded Gameplay & Finishers

  • More Finishers: Every character now has two unique Fatalities.
  • Humorous Finishers: To lighten the tone amidst growing controversy, Midway added Babalities (turning opponents into infants) and Friendships (performing a non-violent act like giving a gift).
  • Stage Fatalities: Players can knock opponents into the Dead Pool (acid), The Pit II (falling to a rocky death), or the Kombat Tomb (spikes on the ceiling).
  • Refined Mechanics: The “juggling” system was officially tightened, and new moves like the Crouching Low Punch were added to provide more tactical options.
