Street Fighter II: Champion Edition (1992) is the first major update to the original arcade hit, running on Capcom’s modular CPS-1 (Capcom Play System 1) hardware. This version is historically significant for making the four “Grand Master” bosses—Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison—playable for the first time and introducing “mirror matches,” allowing two players to select the same character.

Gameplay Features
- Playable Bosses: The roster expanded from 8 to 12 characters, adding the previously computer-only bosses.
- Mirror Matches: Players can now both choose the same character; the second player is distinguished by an alternate color palette.
- Balance Tweaks: Refined the original eight characters’ move sets, such as further differentiating the fighting styles of Ryu and Ken.
- CPS-1 “Chains”: This version retains a specific engine glitch allowing players to “chain” certain rapid-fire light attacks into heavy attacks, a mechanic removed in later versions like Super Street Fighter II.
