Released in 1993, Batsugun is a vertically scrolling shooter developed by Toaplan that is widely recognized as the pioneer of the “bullet hell”. It served as the company’s final shoot-’em-up before they disbanded, with many of its developers later forming the legendary studio Cave.

Gameplay Mechanics
- The “Bullet Hell” Shift: It introduced unprecedentedly dense bullet patterns, requiring players to navigate through “curtains” of projectiles.
- Reduced Hitbox: To make these patterns fair, the player’s ship has a significantly smaller collision area than its actual sprite.
- RPG-style Experience System: Unique for its time, players gain experience by destroying enemies to level up their primary weapon, changing the ship’s appearance and firepower.
- Ship Types: Players choose from three ship types (Sky Mirage, Dragon’s Whisper, and Judgment Flasher), each with distinct firing styles like spread shots or lightning lasers.
